Belfast-based songwriter Joe Kenny unveils his most hard-hitting track yet. Following the success of his comeback single Don’t Close Me Out in March, Joe released the brooding, cinematic alt-rock anthem ‘Sing Out Your Sorrow’ on 15 May.
Swapping his folk roots for a grittier sound, Joe steps into a darker guitar palette and widescreen production, collaborating with producer David Molloy. The track features soaring melodies, layered harmonies, and a driving rhythm section courtesy of Jay Oglesby (drums) and Ronnie O’Flynn (bass), a line-up completed by John Mccullough on keys and the wonderful Niamh Murray on backing vocals.
“Lyrically, Sing Out Your Sorrow takes a look at the falsity and shallowness on social media, and the growing trend of relying too much on external validation,” says Joe. “I suppose I was trying to say that your source of strength and peace comes from within.”

With ‘Don’t Close Me Out’, he leans into a richer, more expansive sound while preserving the intimacy at the heart of his songwriting.

Described as his lockdown labour of love, Joe has taken his passion for Irish Folk music and blended this into a more contemporary sound that could be said to echo musical flavours that include John Martin, U2 and Snow Patrol to name but a few.
